Wimbledon Umpires Manage Games with the SoMo® 650
The tradition of eating strawberries and cream at Wimbledon has been around since the tournament first began in 1877. Strawberries become ripe for picking in May and are synonymous with the arrival of summer and the beginning of the tennis season.
This summer, a new Wimbledon tradition has begun with the SoMo 650 handheld computer being chosen as the device that will assist event officials in the running of The Championships.
Wimbledon umpires will use the SoMo 650, which was chosen for its durability over consumer devices, stable ROM and built-in Wi-Fi® capability, to officiate tennis matches at the tournament.
The SoMo 650 handheld computers will record all of the information required for an official score card, assist the umpire in managing the match by automatically prompting for events like change of end or change of balls, and provide a live feed of the match status on a point-by-point basis.
The system also registers entrants in the tournament, selects eligible registrants, and assigns each person their place in the draw for the first round of The Championships. After each day of play, the system produces a proposed order of play for the next day across the tournament’s 18 courts.
The running of an event like Wimbledon is a huge undertaking, and Socket is proud to be part of such an important system. The amount of data an umpire needs to process is constantly increasing, but advances in mobile technology mean that decisions are made and relayed quicker than ever. The SoMo 650 will play an integral part of the planning and running of The Championships.

Live Lounge 2 PRELOADED is here!
Peak Development are proud to anounce the release of Live Lounge 2 PRELOADED!
This Strictly Limited Edition version of Live Lounge 2 features 39 MP3 tracks pre-loaded onto the award winning SanDisk Sansa e260. The album includes unique versions of the biggest songs from the last 12 months. New stars like Calvin Harris, Robyn and Mark Ronson make an appearance alongside Kasabian and The Fray. The View rattle through their infectious hit 'Same Jeans', 30 Seconds To Mars deliver a majestic reworking of Kanye West's 1 hit 'Stronger' and Biffy Clyro rock up the pop song of the summer, Rihanna's 'Umbrella' . It's a whole mix of genres, but all of the tracks let the quality of the song shine through. As Jo says: "Goosebumps guaranteed!"
Last year, the Radio 1 Live Lounge album was one of the unexpected hits in the run up to Christmas. The album, which consisted of tracks recorded for Jo Whiley's influential daytime show on the station, sold over 800,000 copies and topped the compilation charts for several weeks. It was no surprise however to fans of the show, as it had long been regarded as one of the highpoints of the programme – when all the very biggest names in music would play stripped down versions of their hits, and sometimes performed inspired cover versions.
